Joseph

Joseph

Joseph was sentenced to TYC at 15 for inappropriate sexual behavior with a younger relative, which his mother reported to the sheriff’s office. Though a county judge initially ordered Joseph to seek counseling and released him to his family, county officials insisted he not be allowed to return home with his younger brother and sister.

Faced with a choice between losing their oldest son and losing their younger children, Joseph’s family agreed he be sent to TYC for nine months. His sentence ultimately stretched to more than four years. After his parents became vocal in the media about her son’s cause, Joseph was finally released April 6, 2007.

A few weeks into his stay, his nose was broken during an altercation with guards, an injury for which he was never hospitalized. In following years, Joseph was hospitalized twice for injuries to the face, including a broken jaw.He also says he was raped in a secure holding cell by an older inmate while a guard stood outside and refused to intervene.

As a result of his parents’ activism on his behalf, Joseph’s family has received threats and hate letters published in their local newspaper. Weeks after his release, Joseph joined the merchant marine, but was fired after his juvenile record came to light. He is currently working with his father doing construction along the Texas coast.
